World Energy presents the technical standard for large temperature differential absorption cooling system

- 15% of investment cost and 13% of annual operating cost reduction confirmed

- Following the existing standard temperature difference (5℃) absorption chiller, World Energy presents the technical standard for absorption chillers for district cooling in Korea once again!

World Energy successfully completed the ‘Research on the Feasibility Study for the Application of Absorption Cooling with Large Temperature Difference’ ordered by the Korea District Heating Corporation. This study aims to expand the installation of absorption chillers in district heating supply area, and presents the technical specifications of absorption chillers for district cooling of the Korea District Heating Corporation. World Energy oversaw designing, manufacturing, and analyzing related equipment for absorption chillers.

<Resolving summer power peak by expanding supply of absorption chiller system>

Korea has a problem in that power peaks occur during the summer season due to its high dependence on electricity for cooling.

Absorption cooling using district heating hot water is a representative eco-friendly cooling method that can alleviate electricity demand. World Energy, in cooperation with Korea District Heating Corporation, is already leading the market by presenting a technical standard for absorption chillers for district cooling.

If the existing standard condition of chilled/cooling water temperature difference of 5℃ is revised to 7~10℃, it is expected to further contribute to the expansion of the absorption cooling market by reducing facility investment and operating costs.

<Improve chiller heat exchange efficiency and secure economic feasibility by reducing piping costs and power costs>

As the temperature difference increases, the price of the chiller increases, and the cooling tower and pump power decrease as the flow rate decreases (50%).

World Energy was able to separate the evaporator and absorber into two, increase the evaporation pressure in the high-temperature part, improve the efficiency of the absorber, and maximize the heat exchange capacity in the same area.

As the temperature difference increases, the evaporation temperature of the high-temperature portion may increase, and thus the size reduction rate of the chiller increases.

As a result, it was possible to significantly suppress the increase in cost of the chiller due to the increase in temperature difference.

Through experiments and simulations, it was confirmed that the total initial investment cost was reduced by 15% when the large temperature difference system was applied and the annual operating cost was reduced by 13% when the large temperature difference system was applied.

When a temperature difference of 10℃ is applied, the equipment cost is 18% higher, but the piping construction cost is 41% cheaper. Annual heating, cooling and hot water rates were 6% higher, but annual electricity rates were 34% lower due to reduced pump operating costs.

World Energy

In October 2022, about 80 Hanwha E&C employees received specialized technical training at the World Energy Plant located in Mungyeong City.

The education conducted for the 'pump-embedded large temperature difference (∆T 10℃) absorption chiller' (hereinafter referred to as the integral large temperature difference absorption type) developed by collaboration between World Energy and Seongji Air Conditioning Technology was △absorption chiller basics △wide temperature difference technology and product introduction. It was held in the order of △high-temperature difference refrigerator performance test and △freezer production line tour.

The integrated large temperature difference absorption type is a product that integrates a refrigerator, pump, and various energy saving devices and applies a large temperature difference system for cold water △10℃ (15~5℃) and cooling water △10℃ (41~31℃). Unlike the existing large temperature differential chiller, the application of a two-stage heat exchanger structure increases cooling heat by 17.6% and heat absorption by 21.9%, making it optimized for large temperature differential absorption chillers.

When the integrated large temperature difference absorption type is applied, there are great advantages such as 50% reduction in flow rate, 30-50% reduction in pump power, 30% reduction in cooling tower capacity, and reduction in machine room area.
