World Energy (CEO Ryu Jin-sang), a manufacturing company specializing in absorption chillers and absorption heat pumps said "We recently installed and confirmed the performance of our absorption heat pump that can recover about 50% of 11.8Gcal/h of waste heat to 10 ton/h of 1 bar G of steam at Kumho Petrochemical."
In particular, this supply was able to receive additional orders as World Energy successfully installed and operated an absorption heat pump that produces 8 tons/h of steam with the same kind of waste heat at the same site of Kumho Petrochemical in 2015.
When using low-temperature cooling heat and throwing it away in the atmosphere at high temperatures, it is called a chiller. A heat pump recovers low-temperature heat while using the same refrigeration cycle and uses the high-temperature useful heat. An absorption heat pump is a heat pump which uses a absorption refrigeration cycle.
Absorption heat pumps are also called heat transformers or the second type heat pump. Kumho Petrochemical's process was installed as an application product of absorption chiller that recovers waste heat at industrial sites in order to produce 1 bar G steam with saturation temperature of 120°C by recovering latent heat from Solvent mixed gas of about 83°C that is generated when making synthetic rubber.
A representative of World Energy stressed "Most of the absorption heat pumps that recover waste heat for industrial use have very superior investment payback period of about two years."
For example, if the steam price is 25,000 won per ton (approx. 42 won/Mcal) and the operation time is 7,000 hours per year (80% per year), the cost of recovery at the annual steam price is about 1.4 billion won if the absorbtion heat pump with the recovered steam quantity of 8 ton/h is installed.
If all of the investment costs, including the plumbing construction of the absorption heat pump, are about 2.5 billion won, the recovery period of the investment will be sufficient in 1.8 years.
"Although the value of steam and operation time are important variables in economic evaluation, the price of steam will not be lower than the current value of the household, so the economy can be dependent on the driving time," said an official at World Energy.
Meanwhile, World Energy successfully installed an absorption heat pump that produces 8 tons/h of steam with the same kind of waste heat at the same site in 2015, and is considered to be a company specializing in absorption heat pumps to the extent that it supplied the direct absorption heat pump to Italy last year.
